I just wanted to pop online to say that we are hard at work this week discussing what things will look like as we continue term 3. right now I am working on assessing your act IV/V work for Othello; you can see feedback in your one note under the Othello tab. Because we did part of each act in class, I will be providing separate feedback for the two parts of each act.
Next week teachers will be communicating with you about how we will be continuing to provide educational support and learning opportunities. These are interesting times and will require flexibility and support for both students and teachers. I am always available by email to answer any questions you have.
Hopefully you have heard from your homeroom teacher and you have replied to the message.
Otherwise, stay safe, enjoy some sunshine, and I will talk to you all next week!

You must have heard at this point that schools will be closed indefinitely after the March break. All we know at present is that all students will receive final grades for the year; I wouldn't worry about your applications to post-secondary as all schools will be taking the same actions to protect your health. Teachers have been told we will be working after the break, but what that will look like is unclear. Please feel free to email me at hmartin@vsb.bc.ca if you have work you wish to submit from term 2 or if you have questions.
Keep safe and take time to do things you didn't have time to do before....

I promise that I will be returning; I have been cleared to return Thursday though I will still be on crutches. (boooooooooooooooo)
It sounds like today went well. Of note:
** if you haven't done your journals, you may do one on social media, which you discussed/ investigated today
** assessment will be Tuesday. Remember the language on today's handout can help you if you had trouble expressing both sides of the issue/your opinion, or just if you want some synonyms
** I did find a few more paper journals buried in other work at school this morning (Karandeep, Mandy, Vincy....); I will be finishing journals tonight and tomorrow
** Please do read on another chapter, "Word Arrives in Black". We will be finishing the novel this week.

Wednesday, December 18 - Hello students. I am a bit confused about what is happening with the response journals for the presentations. Perhaps some of you have handed in paper copies of your journals. I will be in after school tomorrow to collect any paper versions, though I did ask you to take photos of these and post them online for feedback. I should have already received THREE journals, with a fourth being completed tonight. Let's just say that I am not seeing that on One Note.
When I return in January, we will be doing an assessment of your journal writing like these responses; like we have done in the past, you will have to have completed a minimum number of responses to do the assessment.
For this reason, I am going to ask you to have completed FOUR journal responses and posted them online in a section called "Journals" or "Response Journals" by Friday, January 3rd.
You should also finish reading until the end of the chapter entitled "The Circle", which finishes on page 191. I can guarantee a reading check upon our return from the break.
Students, I wish you a relaxing and peaceful break, but we also need to ensure that academic responsibilities are being met. Please email me if you have any questions or concerns at all. I will see you when we return in January - hopefully not still on crutches.... I miss everybody and it PAINS me to not be able to give you kind encouragement mixed with intermittent evil eye to ensure you are getting those journals done.

Monday, December 2 - Hello again wonderful students, and repeated apologies for not updating. You may have heard a rumour that I suffered an injury this weekend. Yes, it's true - one of my buffalo beasts sidelined me and unfortunately I have torn something in my knee, so I am on crutches and not able to bear weight. Because I need a few days of rest and recuperation, I have left a different activity for tomorrow rather than beginning presentations. You will be focusing on a sampling of personal narratives and evaluating these in view of doing your own writing later this week. We will begin presentations when I return. Keep reading The Marrow Thieves and I will clarify how far you need to have read soon. Because of this injury, I haven't been able to add the notetaking for the presentations into the term one marks, but I would still like to do so when marks open for corrections later this week. If you have missed any work and you are still hoping to make it up, email me so we can arrange something. I would also appreciate your emailing me your power point presentations if you are able. Consider how you will engage the audience. Do you want to show a short clip? Will you begin with some open-ended questions? How will you close?

Lock down some sources for next class so that you can work on completing your info gathering sheets for the sources you have selected. Remember at least one must be print, but podcasts and videos are also okay. Next class we will do an activity from your Language Power books and continue notetaking.

For the weekend, read the next two chapters of The Marrow Thieves ("Magic Words" and "Haunted in the Bush").
Everyone prepare at least a question / comment/ prediction or two to share when we return on Wednesday.
Be prepared to start seeking specific resources for your presentation on Wednesday.
If you are struggling, start with one of your general ideas, go to a new website (Globe and Mail, CNN, CBC, BBC) and search for your term plus " should" or "debate". You can also do this with a You tube Video, but try to make your starting point a video from a news agency as well (PBS, CNN, CBC, CBS, BBC)
Make sure you can show both sides of an issue and that there is something connected to a current newspaper article; that will make it relevant.

Lock down some sources for next class so that you can work on completing your info gathering sheets for the sources you have selected. Remember at least one must be print, but podcasts and videos are also okay. Next class we will do an activity from your Language Power books and continue notetaking.

For the weekend, read the next two chapters of The Marrow Thieves ("Magic Words" and "Haunted in the Bush").
Everyone prepare at least a question / comment/ prediction or two to share when we return on Wednesday.
Be prepared to start seeking specific resources for your presentation on Wednesday.
If you are struggling, start with one of your general ideas, go to a new website (Globe and Mail, CNN, CBC, BBC) and search for your term plus " should" or "debate". You can also do this with a You tube Video, but try to make your starting point a video from a news agency as well (PBS, CNN, CBC, CBS, BBC)
Make sure you can show both sides of an issue and that there is something connected to a current newspaper article; that will make it relevant.

1. Discussion of your thoughts regarding the Canadian residential school timeline. Hope you completed the worksheet.
2. Make sure you get a copy of The Marrow Thieves. WE are going to be reading this for pleasure and discussion as we work through another project. I saw Cheri Dimaline speak at a Writers' Festival event honouring Richard Wagamese, who wrote Indian Horse (which we read last year in Eng 11) She was incredibly engaging and captivating. I have been dying to read this book - let's do it! Can you please read chapter 1 for Friday.
3. We have worked diligently on improving reading and writing skills; I want to move into critical thinking and expressing opinions about controversial topics so that we move away from formal writing into a less structured mode of sharing ideas. Let's stay with the theme of indigenous rights - a central topic of the English studies courses at present - and consider something that is happening in the U.S.A.
Take a look at the colonialism timeline below. Take a quick read and then, with a partner or small group, make a few notes on a piece of paper to answer the following question: What commonalities do you see between this timeline of colonialism and the one you looked at for Canadian Residential Schools? Make as many point form connections as you see.

Wednesday, October 23 - I am still waiting for quite a few essays on "A Jury". Please ensure these are posted on One Note by Saturday if you hope to complete the in-class essay assessment on Monday. Alternative options will be few and sign up only for after school.
I hope today's activity helped. Most people recognized the 6 / 6 essay as strong, though in some cases people were harsher critics than the teachers who originally assessed these! Keep in mind that these were essays written in a minimal amount of time with new texts on first reading, just like you will be doing on Monday. Most important advice from what I am seeing in your practice: include specifics/quotations, keep verbs consistent, try to avoid fragments by including complete thoughts.
I also had your annotation assessments ready for you to view, but I forgot, and no one thought to remind me as you were fully into essay critique mode! I have not "translated" these into grades yet, which I will do on the weekend; then I will begin to post information on My Ed. Friday, October 11 - Happy Thanksgiving Weekend! - Good work on the interpretation of the key details and symbols in "A Jury of Her Peers". Important reminders from class:
- Tuesday we will do out consistent verb tense quiz - see ideas for practice at the bottom of the worksheet we did with the sample essay on Romeo and Juliet. The ChompChomp verb tense section is a good place to do some work.
- Tuesday we will also do our annotations assessment. Remember, you will not be doing it if you have not completed the 3 sample annotations and received feedback. You will need to arrange a time with me outside of class to come in and do them.
- Please submit your "Interpreter" essay samples ASAP. It is to your advantage to get some feedback from other students, but if you aren't able to over the long weekend and wish to submit it, that is okay.
- Thursday I will give you some class time for composing your FINAL practice writing - topic choices are the following:
a) Examine the symbols in "A Jury" - consider how various elements in the story suggest Mrs. Wright's loneliness/isolation, her deteriorating state of mind, and her transformation from the young, vibrant Minnie.
b) Contrast the purposes and attitudes of the men and the women in "A Jury" (likely a 4 paragraph essay)
c) If you are tired of writing about stories and want something a little different, you could write an informational/ opinion essay about what we can do as a society to help people like Paul, Mr. Kapasi, Minnie Wright, who feel misunderstood, isolated, or lost. You could consider writing a body paragraph on why people feel this why, another on what the consequences are when people feel this way, and one on what we as a society can do to prevent and change this. You can use entirely your own ideas, or do research, but any outside info must be documented as such:

That sore throat this week, which became increasingly problematic along with the proximity to the weekend, developed into full blown voice loss Saturday - a complication of overuse of voice mixed with a virus, I believe. Hope you are feeling better than I am!

Wednesday, September 18 - Hello everyone. I am including here some materials that could help as we begin our writing and editing work.
Please find below a document with a few basics on how to include quotations and a sample character essay with a logical and straightforward format. (ignore the beginning as you do not have to do the assignment described within!)
Find also another lengthy document with information on quotation use.
Please keep in mind that the process below is what we will be doing to develop our writing:
* choose one of the topics presented to you (Tom's character, Paul's character, contrasting imagery in "Paul's Case", or how Cather uses contrasting imagery to suggest Paul's character)
* brainstorm and compose your analysis in essay format
* get a peer to read and comment on your essay; use the handout provided, or if your work is online, get them to type their feedback along with your essay
* make any changes
* submit to me for feedback.
Come see me for advice or feedback at any stage of this process.
We will do a few practice writings before I do a formal assessment of your writing.
Don't forget the quiz on Friday for Run-ons.

Monday, September 16 -- Good job slogging through a hopefully semi-interesting review of lit terms as connected to "The Smile", and then a dive right into the use of imagery in "Paul's Case". Check out the notes below if you wish. Don't forget to look again at how Paul is described in school - so depressing! Wed. we will start working on practise essay writing; I will give you a choice of some topics and will ask you to do a few attempts at writing/editing before I assess your writing.
The next story, "Interpreter of Maladies", by Jhumpa Lahiri, can be found at the link below if you wish to preview. You should have read it well for Friday. Consider the following: Both Tom and Paul are out of synch with the society around them; what about the protagonist of this story, the interpreter? What causes his disconnection?

We will keep working on "The Smile" either Tuesday or Thursday, depending on the Gates test. Again think of it as review / learning some key terms that may be useful to you as you annotate your next text when you read. Reread "the Smile" if you need to and think about what the central ideas are if you felt a little bit rushed with the discussion on Friday.
You can find below a dictionary of terms to help you if you wish.
You can also find a document below with the story "Paul's Case". We will be talking about this story Thursday at the earliest, so I am posting this in case you wish to get a head start on the reading. It's a LONG story, it's not an easy story, but it's a good story worth reading. Don't worry if there is unfamiliar vocabulary. Try to understand how others view Paul and how he feels.
Remember that when you read it, I would like you to make at least FOUR annotations, but there is an optional other activity below in green. See the handout I gave you for ideas about how to do this. They don't have to be super long - they could be a few sentences each, but they should as detailed or more detailed than the "do this" examples on the annotation handout attached to "The Smile". See below for a document you can use to type in your annotations as you read.
If you were totally confused by the annotations idea, you could choose to instead answer these questions:
What do Paul's teachers think about him and why? Are their opinions fair?
Where does Paul feel comfortable? Why?
What is Paul's family life like?
What kind of imagery (sights, sounds, colours) is connected to Paul at school ? What about Paul at the theater or in New York?
What happens in the end? Why?
